In Blacksburg, Virginia, Virginia Tech football is starting a new era. Returning the majority of their starters from last year, there has been a ton of preseason hype surrounding the team.
The 2024-2025 college football season has begun with a lot of upsets, and Virginia Tech has not been immune. The biggest of these upsets is Florida State, a preseason top ten team, who has lost their first three games to unranked opponents. Perhaps even bigger was Notre Dame’s home loss to MAC team Northern Illinois. Both of these loses were much more publicized than Virginia Tech’s loss to Vanderbilt, a team picked to finish last in the SEC.
“I had high hopes for this season but that loss hurt badly,” said Carter Yost(10).
This was not the best start to a program that has struggled with coaching changes and losing records over the last few years. However, the team has won their last two games against Marshall and Old Dominion and hope to improve on last year’s 7-6 bowl winning season. This success drawn attention and got some younger players and transfer portal players interested in attending Virginia Tech.
Carter Yost, “Virginia Tech should be a top 25 team, they just need to pull themselves together,” “Yeah, they aren’t even playing until the 4th quarter when it actually matters,” added Bryce Woodson(10).
All of these new recruits and attention gave Virginia Tech football some attention to other colleges and people creating a massive amount of hype. Virginia Tech was named a dark horse for the CFB playoffs and favorite to win the ACC championship this year. Their season was not off to a good start since they lost to Vanderbilt for there first game 34-27 in overtime. Since then they have beat Marshall University and Old Dominion University creating themselves a 2-1 record. They play the Rutgers on September 21st which is an up and coming football school since they have gotten some interest from younger players.
Virginia Tech is still a favorite to winning the ACC championship since Florida State had 4 upsets coming into the season. They also still have a chance to make playoffs with there being 12 teams now. Virginia tech’s football program has a bright future Infront of them and hopefully it carries along for a while.
” I hope Virginia Tech can pull it all together and have a successful program,” Bryce Woodson(10).
In the preseason, Virginia Tech was named a dark horse candidate for the CFB playoffs and a favorite to win the ACC championship this year. Despite the opening loss, Virginia Tech is still a favorite to win the ACC championship, especially with Florida State stumbling out of the blocks. They also still have a chance to make the playoffs due to the NCAA expanding the pool of teams from four to twelve.
Virginia Tech’s football program has a bright future ahead of them, and hopefully, it continues for a while.
