Red Ribbon Week at Hidden Valley High School is more than just a series of school events, it is a movement directed at promoting a drug-free lifestyle among students. The campaign’s website highlights, “It is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Show your personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon, October 23 – 31st.”
Mrs. Worrell, Hidden Valley’s Life Counselor feels that Red Ribbon Week is representative of a very important goal across the country. “The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America.”
This year, Hidden Valley High School is set to host a variety of engaging activities designed to captivate and educate students. From October 23rd to 31st, the school will be holding themed dress-up days carrying strong anti-drug messages. Additionally, there will be a Red Ribbon-themed door decorating contest, and a costume contest for both staff and students that line up with the theme: “Drugs are a trick, not a treat.” The atmosphere will be further enhanced by drug prevention messages during morning announcements, colorful Red Ribbon Week decorations, and a display of the Red Ribbon message on the school marquee. “In addition to these activities, there are other contests that students can enter on the Red Ribbon website,” said Mrs. Worrell.
To further extend the impact of Red Ribbon Week past the 31st of October, students are encouraged to seize in efforts to promote a drug-free lifestyle. “They can discuss the importance of staying drug-free with their peers, actively participate in extracurricular activities, and share refusal strategies,” explained Mrs. Worrell. It’s also vital for students to support friends who might be struggling by encouraging them to talk to a trusted adult and to take part in other anti-drug programs,” added Mrs. Worrell. The following anti drug programs specialize in youth drug prevention and assistance: The Youth Substance Use Prevention Program and Overdose Lifeline Youth Education & Prevention Programs.
