Mu Alpha Theta, led by Mr. Harris, is an Honor Society here at Hidden Valley High School in the 2024-2025 school year.
Each February Mr. Harris, the sponsor of Mu Alpha Theta, passes out invitations to this prestigious math Honor Society to students who meet certain requirements. For example, students must successfully complete four semesters of Algebra 2 or higher, be currently enrolled in a fifth semester of an advanced math, maintain a math GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have paid the one-time membership fee.
Many people may not know much about Mu Alpha Theta, but according to Mr. Harris, “HVHS received its membership in 2009”, and it is worth thinking about when it comes to college resumes, future job applications, and more. Another advantage of joining this Honor Society is that it will fit into a busy student’s schedule. Regular meetings are not held, rather the leadership team simply meets for planning purposes.
Students who qualify to join this Honor Society can benefit from a lifetime membership that transfers to colleges and universities along with the public recognition of their achievement during graduation ceremonies. Members of Mu Alpha Theta are also afforded additional scholarship opportunities that should be considered if you decide to join. Mr. Harris said, “Mu Alpha Theta is organized and designed to foster excitement for math.” Activities are open to students, members, and non-members to do just that!
Mu Alpha Theta not only creates opportunities for scholarships, but it also provides opportunities to make friends, compete, challenge yourself, and improve your math skills.
