As we reach the end of another school year, we tend to look more towards our graduating seniors and less towards our retiring staff. In this article, Hidden Valley High School and the Journalism department aim to highlight Mr. Broughman, a teacher who has been at Hidden Valley for 18 years both teaching and coaching.
Math teacher Mr. Broughman has been extremely involved in the Hidden Valley community and math department. He has been dedicating himself to his work and his students for the past 18 years that he has been at this school. He became a teacher to change students’ perspective on math and be able to thoroughly explain any kind of math to students.
“I have always loved being able to show and teach things to students, even back when I was coaching. I just like seeing people apply stuff that I’m teaching,” stated Mr. Broughman.
Broughman has had many memorable moments at Hidden Valley and as a teacher as a whole. His favorite moment working for Roanoke County as a teacher was when his wife won a golden apple. Another thing he remembers is every time an old student reaches out to him. Knowing that he had an impact on someone else’s life is very important to him.
Mr. Broughman said, “Whenever people reach out to me, like past students, they tell me that I helped or made an impact on them. When they say I made a difference, well that makes a difference to me.”
As Mr. Broughman’s career comes to an end, he has reflected on his years here and how much he will miss it. Being a part of something as great as the Hidden Valley math department has had an impact on him and his life as a whole.
“It’s hard to tell you everything I will miss, but I can say with certainty the thing I will miss the most is our math department here. I’ve known everyone here for so long, to go from seeing them every day to only every so often is going to be an adjustment. I think I’m really just going to miss the closeness and our jokes,” stated Mr. Broughman.
