February 6th was Hidden Valley’s first Morgan’s Message meeting of the 2024 school year. President Camille O’Brien (11) says, “It feels very rewarding to be the president of this club, which I have been supporting for about two years now, and it’s just very exiting to be able to spread the word.”
Morgan’s Message is an organization that is trying to gain awareness to mental health, after Morgan Rodgers committed suicide in 2019 at 22 years old. Morgan was a D1 women’s lacrosse player who played for Duke University until she suffered a knee injury in January of 2017 . Morgan moved back home for her 12 month recovery, determined to get back on the field. Morgan struggled a lot in silence even though she tried her hardest to put on a brave face for her friends and family. According to the website, “Morgan’s Message is committed to elevating the diversity of perspectives found within athletics. We aim to build a community which respects, supports and actively engages all aspects of identity.”
“I want not only for our athletes but also our students in general to be aware of the stigma of mental health and how to break it,” says president Camille O’Brien. It is very important to many people that teen’s have a good recourse they can go too so they don’t have to struggle in the dark like Morgan did.
