When most people think of October they think of Halloween, but for other people it means something else- Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month isn’t just about people fighting the disease or for the survivors, but also the families of patients. It’s about raising awareness for patients that can’t afford their treatments and are unable to get the help they need. There are many organizations and programs that do fundraisers that help raise money for those who need it, such as the Susan G. Koman organization.
At Hidden Valley, Mrs. Preston runs the cancer awareness club. “The club was started as a way to get people interested in raising awareness for those battling the disease,” says Mrs. Preston.
Some people may think that someone having cancer only affects the patient, but it affects families as well. Organizations help families of patients cope with the loss of a patient or when they find out they were diagnosed. While it may be hard for families to raise awareness during the month of October, especially if they lost a loved one to the disease, they still volunteer to share their stories so other families or patients don’t feel alone during this hard time in their life. It’s important to celebrate this month for many reasons, but most importantly for being there for those who need it.
