Students at Hidden Valley High School are sweeping into a new autumn season of fashion! Fall is the best season of the year, and the best season for fashion, the weather is not too hot, but not too cool. This makes it easier for students to use layering and have a more unique style.
Nowadays, students lives are often influenced by social media, the news, shows, etc. With that being said, fashion is also influenced by outside factors like social media. Fashion inspiration is gathered in many different ways by different students. Students at Hidden Valley get their fall fashion inspiration from many different sources: old TV shows, family members, early 2000’s fashion, rappers, Pinterest, the hallways at Hidden Valley, Downtown Roanoke, and Instagram. Camille O’Brien (grade 11) says, “Sometimes I see people in the hallways and around town, then I base what I wear off that.” Fashion inspiration can come from anywhere, if you look around!
A big debate is going around Hidden Valley and many high-school and college age students about “fast fashion.” Fast fashion is inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to trends. Fast fashion is a very controversial matter. Just like most things, there are pros and cons to fast fashion. Many students at Hidden Valley High School have different opinions on fast fashion. Some students participate in fast fashion while not agreeing with the concept of it. Lets be honest, it is cheap and high school students often have a low income and tend to follow trends, causing their style to change often. Alliyah Munoz (grade 11) says, “I think its fun, because I like changing my style up often and trying new things. I do think if you are going to buy fast fashion, to do it in attainable ways, like thrifting.”
Some students don’t support or buy fast fashion at all. Ritvik Vasudeva (grade 12) says, “I try not to buy from places like Shein, which is a huge mass production fast fashion company based in China. They make their clothing unethical.” Fast fashion involves child labor, pollution, littering, and produces a huge amount of unwanted waste. Other students at Hidden Valley have their own opinions on fast fashion and whether or not it is right, and there are some who simply don’t care.
Now, let’s talk about where people are buying their fall clothing from! There are a great deal of places to shop online and in person. From small businesses online to huge designers like Gucci, there are thousands of options to fit peoples unique styles and interests. Many students at Hidden Valley like to shop at thrift stores and small businesses to get clothing cheaper, and to fit their unique style. Alliyah Munoz states, “I get almost all my clothes from Plato’s Closet.” Ritvik Vasudeva differs in this sense stating, “I get my clothes from a lot of different places.” Some get their clothes from family members, to have less waste and spend less money, especially if you have the same style. This includes Maleigh Schmeling (grade 11) who says, “My sister has a really similar style to me. I get most of my clothes from my sister and thrift stores.”
No matter where you get your clothes or what your style is, wear what you want this fall season! After all fall is the best season for fashion at Hidden Valley High.
