Some winners of the 2023 Grammy’s have sparked controversy in the music industry. Award shows have started to be called out for their odd nominations and unusual winners for certain categories.

One of the most controversial wins this year was from Bonnie Raitt winning song of the year. Considering she was up against artists such as Beyonce, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift, viewers from around the world were shocked to see the award go to someone less known than those with top hits.

Another one of the controversial wins was when Harry Styles won album of the year, basically the most important category of the night. Fans of Beyonce, Lizzo, Coldplay, Adele, and other nominees were angered by their artist not winning this category. It even got to the point where live audience members began to yell at Harry while he was on-stage collecting his award.

Abby Wanek, a student and HVHS says, “I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to both the winner and the award show as a whole when audiences boo those on stage. Artists wouldn’t want their fans to do that.”

There isn’t much that can be done to avoid uncomfortable situations like this. Taylor Swift, a talented musician who knows stage embarrassment all too well, stood in support of Harry, displaying the proper behavior of an audience member. It is important for fans to remember that artists in the music industry are humans too.
