The 2024 Hidden Valley High School volleyball team cemented its legacy this season by winning its second consecutive state championship. With a dominant 29-2 record, the Titans proved themselves to be a powerhouse through teamwork, strategic play and unwavering persistence.
Senior Sophie Arnold, a key player for the team, reflected on the challenges they faced this year, including significant changes in the coaching staff and roster.
“We had a new coach and a brand-new coaching staff,” Arnold said. “One of our starters had just torn their ACL, so we were missing a couple of players.”
Despite these early-season setbacks, the Titans adapted quickly and maintained their winning momentum.
The close bond among teammates also played a major role in their success. Senior Maddie Carter emphasized the value of years spent playing together.
“All of the seniors—we’ve played together since seventh grade,” Carter said. “We’ve just gotten really close over the years, and that will always help build a team atmosphere.”
Carter also noted how the experience helped her grow both on and off the court.
“As an athlete, mentality is a big thing, especially trying to go back-to-back with state championships,” she said. “And as a person, it’s about building really strong relationships.”
The team featured a standout roster of talented athletes. Arnold contributed 394 kills and 75 serving aces, while Carter led the defense with 360 digs. Their performances were critical in key moments, including a semifinal victory against Christiansburg and the state championship win over Grafton High School.
Caleigh Ponn (12), the Titans’ star outside hitter, led the team with 550 kills, 341 digs, 69 service aces and 39 assists. She delivered a standout performance in the title match, recording 20 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Grafton. Ponn’s remarkable season earned her the title of Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year.
Led by head coach Pierre Ellis, the Lady Titans demonstrated athletic excellence, determination and sportsmanship throughout the season. Their back-to-back championships are a testament to the team’s hard work and shared commitment.
