Caleigh Ponn, a senior at Hidden Valley High School, has been named the 2024-25 Gatorade Virginia Volleyball Player of the Year. This prestigious award, which has recognized outstanding high school athletes for 40 years, honoring athletes who excel not only in their sport but also in their communities. Ponn is the first athlete from Hidden Valley Highschool to receive this honor, joining an impressive list of past winners like April Ross, Kerri Walsh Jennings, and Ayden Ames.
Ponn’s incredible performance on the volleyball court in the 2024 season played a significant role in her winning this award. She helped lead her team to a 29-2 record and a Class 3 state championship. As a senior outside hitter, she recorded 550 kills, 341 digs, and 69 service aces. In the state title match, she delivered 20 kills to help her team secure the victory. Her .429 kill percentage further highlights her dominance.
This award was not just earned on the court. Her work off the court, including her leadership and involvement in her community, was also a key factor.
“I am really happy for her. She has worked really hard since she was young and this award is not just athleticism the cool thing is character and community service which not a lot of people know that she does,” stated Hidden Valley physical education teacher (Caleigh’s Mom).
Gatorade emphasizes athletes who demonstrate excellence both in sports and in their communities, and Ponn’s dedication to giving back made her a standout choice for this award. Ponn has been an active volunteer, contributing to various local initiatives and positively impacting those around her.
Beyond her success in the community, Ponn holds state records for total kills (2,285) and assists (346), solidifying her as one of the top players in Virginia volleyball history. She was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Second Team All-American list, a reflection of her skill and consistency.
Despite the pressure of high expectations, Ponn always delivers, earning the respect of both coaches and fellow players.
Caleigh Ponn (12) says, “I feel blessed to get such an amazing award that not many people in Roanoke have received. It means a lot to me as it kind of is a reflection of the hard work I have put in throughout the years so I’m forever grateful.”
As part of the Gatorade award, Ponn will receive a grant to donate to a social impact partner, further supporting her commitment to making a difference. Ponn’s combination of athletic excellence and community involvement makes her a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
