The Australian Open (AO) is a famous annual tennis tournament in Melbourne, Australia, that kicks off the Grand Slam tennis season. This year, our finalists for women were Madison Keys vs. Aryna Sabalenka and in the men’s category we had Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Zverev. With Keys winning her first Grand Slam title and Sinner winning his third, fans all over the world have watched closely to see how this played out.
“I watch the Australian Open every year and I really thought Aryna Sabalenka because she the games were close and she is a really strong player,” states Caroline Watkins (11). Watkins initially rooted for Coco Gauff exclaiming, “she is one of my tennis idols and a great face for the sport.” While Gauff did not make it to the semifinals, Watkins believes that this was still a wonderful tournament and one worth remembering.
While Keys did a fantastic job taking home her well-deserved title, the men’s side of the Australian Open was more predictable in its outcome. Many fans anticipated, and some bet money on Sinner taking home his title.
“I honestly am a big Djokovic fan, but I think he is fading in his prime. While his retirement is needed for his health, I was really hoping he would get one last win before he left,” remarks Sebastian Croteau (12). Croteau says while he didn’t expect Djokovic to win, he would’ve liked to see him play as a finalist. Croteau expected Sinner’s win and was pleased.
The 2025 AO is most notably talked about for its record-breaking prize money and the introduction of coaching pods. More importantly though, the end of Djokovic’s time on the court and the beginning of Madison Keys grand slam titles!
