As the 2024 NCAA College football season comes to an end, postseason games are being decided and season awards are being handed out. The Heisman trophy, given to the best player in College Football, has its final four nominees: Ashton Jeanty, Cam Ward, Travis Hunter, and Dillon Gabriel.
The Heisman trophy is one of the most well known awards in college football. The first award in 1935 was given to Jay Berwanger in New York City. Every year since, the award has been handed out to the season’s best college football player. The award has its own ceremony, which is televised and continues to be given out in New York City by the Downtown Athletic Club.
“I think the best player in college football this season was Ashton Jeanty, he had so many records and almost broke Barry Saunders all time rushing record,” explains Carter Yost(10). Drew Brislin(12) states, “Ashton Jeanty was probably the best player, because he carried his team into the playoffs.”
Travis Hunter ended up winning the 2024 Heisman Trophy. “I don’t think that Travis Hunter was the right pick as there were better options that were in the final four who deserved it more,” shares Yost. Brislin added, “No I don’t think that Travis Hunter was the right choice, I feel like he was overhyped and didn’t perform as he is recognized as.”
Was Travis Hunter the right choice for Heisman? “I think no because I feel like Ashton Jeanty and Caw Ward had more of a breakout season or a better season than Travis Hunter did,” states Yost. Brislin followed with, “I don’t think he was the right choice because Ashton Jeanty just had the better season and led many categories for the running back position even if Travis Hunter was a two way player.”
