On Saturday November 16, our boys cross country team, as well as qualifiers Leila Ramey (12) and Charlotte Hieber (9), took the field at Virginia Tech to run at the VHSL Cross Country State Championships. The Virginia Tech cross country course, better known as the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course, is a 3.1-mile course that sits on the Tech campus. The course is an all-grass course that guides runners through a rural terrain of meadows, cornfields, and wooded locations typical of the Tech surroundings.
Starting bright and early, our two girl qualifiers, Leila Ramey and Charlotte Hieber took the course have an outstanding race. Coming in with a 21:48.30 time, Charlotte placed 56th out of 103 just as a freshman, giving us high hopes to see her improve thought her time on the lady titans team. Leila placed 86th out of 103 girl runners in the class 3 division with a 23:39.10 time. “It was definitely bittersweet, I’ve been doing cross country for so long and I’m sad its over, but also so incredibly proud of how much the team has grown. The team has such strong potential in the upcoming years and I’m just so happy to have gotten the change to be part of it,” says Leila Ramey.
Shortly after the girls raced, the boys team took the line consisting of Spencer Thacker (12), Jacob Stewart (12), Enzo Coniglione (10), Noah Stewart (9), Ty Swank (12), Matti Settle (12), and Gabe Arthur (10). The boys all ran great race, breaking school history placing the highest they ever had at 4th place in the VSHL Class 3 XC championship. Along with the 4th place win, Spencer Thacker got 10th out of 103 boys with a 16:38.10 time, making him a First Team All State Athlete.
Both the boys and girls had great races, and we wish them all the best of luck in the upcoming track and cross country next year hoping to break more records.
