Mike Tyson boxed Jake Paul in Arlington, Texas on November 15th, 2024. Mike Tyson, American boxer, weighed in on November 14th at 228.4 pounds. Tyson has been boxing professionally for 20 years and is 58 years old. He retired in 2005, but he came out of retirement for this match. Jake Paul, American boxer, weighed in at 227.2 pounds, at 27 years old. Paul began his boxing career in 2018, making this his 6th year in the ring.
Garry Norris Jr. (11), a member of the HVHS wrestling team says, “I initially wanted Mike Tyson to win because Jake Paul is a not-so-nice person who only calls out old people and not young people. The young people he does call out are 40 years old at a minimum.” Norris was not happy with the outcome of this fight because he believes it was staged, stating, “The first two rounds of the fight, Mike was throwing in very good blows and he looked completely different from his practice videos. I have seen toddlers fight better.”
While the popular opinion argues that this fight was unfair, the fight did meet the guidelines of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations. Paul won 40 million dollars from this fight by unanimous decision, while Tyson only won 20 million.
“I was rooting for Mike Tyson even though he’s older. I didn’t think he was going to win, however, I really didn’t want to see Jake Paul win,” states Brendan Rose (12). “It seemed like a popularity stunt. Tyson is basically a 60 year old man at that point so this really didn’t seem fair. The result of the match was expected, but disappointing, considering Paul took advantage of a old man,” ends Rose.
Neither Norris nor Rose was satisfied by the result of this fight because they don’t feel it was a fair fight. Many viewers did not want Paul to win, but expected it due to the age gap, and the fact that Tyson is retired. Whether the fight could have been staged is still up for debate, but overall everyone’s opinion varies.
