On February 11, 2024, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs played in Superbowl 58 in Las Vegas. This Superbowl was highly controversial, largely due to the fact that it was a close game and refereeing decisions had a huge impact on the outcome.
There were huge debates on who would win this super bowl. Evan Cobb(9) said, “I think the Chiefs will win because of there defense and past experience in the playoffs.”
Carter Dralle (9) disagreed, “I think that the 49ers will win because the 49ers have such a powerful offense and the Chiefs beat the Ravens in the AFC Championship.”
During the game, there were some questionable calls that could’ve changed the momentum of the game. Carter Dralle(9) explained, “The game was not being called both ways, and it was unfair to the 49ers, because they got cheated out.”
Evan Cobb(9) explained, “I disagree, because I only saw a couple questionable calls. Refs make mistakes and this was an even game with most calls being called on both sides.”
There are many fans arguing about this game and blaming the NFL for having a “script” where the Chiefs advance in the playoffs. The Chiefs were up and down all year, relying on their tight end Travis Kelce to carry the receiving corps.
Furthermore, the fan theories about the Chiefs being “scripted” by the NFL are fueled by the fact that the Chiefs benefit from penalties committed by their opponents more than any other team in the NFL.
Winning three Superbowls in the last five years is a huge accomplishment, but a cloud of controversy continues to surround the franchise as many NFL fans believe they are part of some conspiracy NFL agenda.
