Hurricane Helene, a devastating hurricane that caused major destruction to the Carolina’s, hit the U.S last week and has been the most destructive hurricane since Katrina. The hurricane has caused buildings and towns to be destroyed and many lives to be lost.
The hurricane made landfall September 24th and lasted until September 29th. It hit Georgia as a deadly category 4. It narrowly avoided the state of Florida and caused the most destruction to Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas. The ultra-warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico are what helped make this hurricane so large and destructive. Hurricanes thrive on warm water which is where they gain their energy.
Hurricane Helene caused a 500-mile path of destruction and left people without power for days on end. “I didn’t have power for a week due to the hurricane and school was out for even longer,” said Jackson Voelker who lives in South Carolina which took a major hit from the hurricane. Along with its large path of destruction, the catastrophic flooding took around 230 lives. There are many relief efforts in place to help reconstruct the many schools, buildings, and towns that have been demolished. There are many different platforms where people can donate money to help the victims of Hurricane Helene.
It is important to prepare for the events of a natural disaster like a hurricane. “I was prepared for our power being out for the hurricane and I made sure to wash all of our clothes and made plans to leave for my parent’s house that had power,” said Buffy Kadela whose power was out for multiple days. You can prepare for the events of a hurricane by finding extra food and maybe relocate to a place with power.
