New York Fashion Week (NYFW) took place from Friday, February 9, 2024, through Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Two of the brands/designers that held a show this past week include Thom Browne and Phillip Lim. As always, these designers made a statement, so let’s briefly look into what NYFW is and what these designers brought to the table.
NYFW first began in 1943, to expose fashion designers’ work in the time during World War Two. Since then, NYFW is held every February and September to display fashion designers’ work on select models for the upcoming seasons of fashion in the span of a week. NYFW is very bittersweet for busy designers, models, makeup artists, and all the other talented people that are behind the scenes of these shows. Many people do not realize all the time, money, and work that goes into these shows. However, when shows go right it is rewarding for all involved!
“I really enjoyed the Thom Browne fashion show this NYFW! It was very creative and fun,” says Caitlin Musser (11).
Thom Browne is an American fashion designer that was born in the US in 1965. Thom Browne is easily most known for his reconceptualization of classic men’s suits. In recent years, Browne became more relevant in the womenswear scene after First Lady Michelle Obama wore one of his designs to the 2013 presidential inauguration.
This NYFW, Thom Browne closed off the shows with his upcoming collection on Valentine’s Day. As far as fashion goes, his show included an array of coats, jackets, skirts, trousers, sometimes experimenting with no trousers. Noticeably, there was inclusion of solids, checks, and prints. Some ensembles were fully formed, and others had a deconstructed feel which is a longtime theme in Browne’s collections. It was an emotional moment for fans at the end of Browne’s show when he handed his partner Andrew Bolton a box of chocolates and they kissed, in honor of the special day. Overall, Browne has made many accomplishments, including his show this past week!
Phillip Lim, born in 1973, is an American fashion designer of Chinese descent. Over the span of ten years, as the creative director and co-founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim, Lim established his brand of youthful, elegant wardrobe classics with a twist. He now finds himself at the helm of the contemporary fashion scene, designing women’s, men’s, accessories, and shoes. He is considered one of the most talented and successful young designers of his generation. This NYFW, Lim’s idea was to erase the distinctions between work clothes and play clothes (Nast, 2024).
This NYFW was a success and these two designers slayed!
