On Thanksgiving morning, millions around the world will wake up to watch the 97th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, hosted in New York City by Will Coss. Arabella Harding (10) says, “It’s pretty crazy how it all comes together every year just due to the size of everything. It’s a really great tradition and it’s fun to watch every year to see it change over time.”
Macy’s started this tradition back in 1924 and it continues to be a tradition around the U.S. till this day. The Parade was started by Macy’s employs, which at the time were mainly European immigrants. They wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. the same way that they did back home, so they brought their festivities to New York City. Macy’s employees marched through 34th street all dressed up in costumes. This led to cars, floats, animals, and amazing performers later joining them down the road.
There are two types of families on Thanksgiving Day. The family that will sleep in to wake up and watch the spectacular Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, or the family that wakes up at 6am to run the local turkey trot. If you are the family that watches the parade, then you are doing it right. Watching this spectacular performance is something that many kids or adults dream of doing; whether that be dancing, marching in the band or just being on one of the floats. James Marra (12) says, “I always thought that being on a float would be really cool.”
