The end of M&Ms?
As of early 2023, the M&M company has “paused” the use of their famous chocolate characters and replaced their image with Maya Rudolph. Criticism over the M&M’s appearances began in 2022 and has only escalated since.
Criticism over the female character’s shoes were just the kickstart leading to the “pause of the candy characters.” The candy company attempted to become more inclusive and updated their characters’ appearances, giving the green M&M a sportier appeal. Although this was an inclusive attempt to solve problems, it only created more. Groups of feminist activists spoke out against the change, noting that “being hot” isn’t a problem as itself and there was nothing wrong with her original look.
When asked “Do you believe the M&M topic should be considered controversial?” Briann Lee answered that “no, not in the slightest, but it’s funny that it is.” Many find the controversy over the footwear of an imaginary chocolate character ridiculous while others are quite passionate for the inclusive designs of the candy characters.
Unable to please any side of the argument, the company “paused” their use of the classic chocolate characters and announced that the replacement would be comedian Maya Rudolph. The company felt Maya Rudolph could represent everyone with her personality. How the public will react to the change of the beloved candy representatives is another question.
As for sales, according to Lily Hatfield she believes, “Yes I think it will decrease sales, I feel like people will be on strike, trying to get the characters back.” The public’s reaction to the “pause” of the characters is unpredictable at the time, however many will miss the cherished candy characters.
