TYLA by South African singer, Tyla was released March 22nd, 2024. This is Tyla’s debut album. She had her career breakthrough late last year with her insanely popular single, “Water,” which became the lead single of this album. This album blends genres of R&B, pop, and afrobeats making it unique compared to other popular songs in the pop genre. She sings about themes of love, passion, intimacy, falling in love, heartbreak, moving on, and more.
The lead single of the album was “Water” which blew up leading to “Water” (ft. Travis Scott) a few months later. In December 2023, Tyla teased the album by dropping “TYLA” the EP. Little did we know she released three future songs off the album. Tyla also included some iconic features on the album including Travis Scott, Kelvin Momo, Tems, Gunna, Skillibeng, and Becky G. The album is well put together and has been in the works since 2021. Tyla had lots to do with the production and songwriting with some help. Tyla has blown up and garnered a huge fan base over the past few months, making this album highly anticipated.
The track list includes fourteen tracks and lasts a bit over thirty-eight minutes. The tracks include “Intro” (ft. Kelvin Momo), “Safer,” “Water,” “Truth or Dare,” “No. 1” (ft. Tems), “Breathe Me,” “Butterflies,” “On and On,” “Jump” (ft. Gunna and Skillibeng), “Art,” “On My Body” (ft. Becky G), “Priorities,” “To Last,” and “Water” (ft. Travis Scott). The most popular songs from the album, of the new tracks, are “Art” and “Jump.” Tyla has also released music videos for the songs “Water,” “Water” (ft. Travis Scott), “Art,” and “Truth or Dare.”
TYLA has been a huge hit and success. It debuted at 24 on the Billboard Hot 200 and is the highest-charting album by a female African soloist in the chart’s history. I personally love the album. I was hooked on Tyla when “Water” dropped and have been waiting for the full album. She did not disappoint. It is an incredibly unique album, and you cannot find songs like these often. It is such a good dance album but is also so lyrically complex. My favorite song off the album is for sure “Jump” (ft. Gunna and Skillibeng), but all of them are great. I give the album 5/5 shields!
