Ariana Grande had previously taken a long break from music with her last album being released in 2020. “Yes, And?” is vastly different from Grande’s past releases. It is a dance and electric pop song that addresses all the scrutiny she has received in the past years. She is in contact with things like her relationship status, her confidence, and dealing with fame. “Yes, And?” earned over eleven million plays within its first 24 hours on Spotify globally, marking Grande’s largest song debut on Spotify.
After the release of her last album Positions, Grande has focused more on her makeup brand and her upcoming performance in the movie version of the Broadway musical Wicked. She teased her comeback to music in October 2023 and then finally confirmed an album release coming soon right before the new year. On January 4th, Ariana hinted at the new song by wearing the official merch in candid. The cover artwork is a close picture of Ariana with a gorgeous red lip on. The single was officially released with a music video on January 12th.
Ariana Grande wrote and produced “Yes, And?” herself with help on production from Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh. The song discusses lots of important topics to Grande and the backlash she has received over the past few years. For her whole career, Ariana has been constantly commented on for her body image and she addresses it in the song by saying, “Do not comment on my body, do not reply.” The most controversial part of the song is where she addresses her relationship status. Ariana Grande had been married for the past few years and announced their divorce this past summer. Following that, she entered a relationship with one of her costars from Wicked.
The drama with their new relationship is he was married and had just had a newborn. The rumors circulating state Grande broke up this marriage and he left his family for her, making lots of fans disappointed and mad at Grande. She addresses how her fans need to stay out of her love life. She also addresses how her confidence will not be affected by the people who hate her and how she stays positive and grateful despite all these opinions.
This single is quite different from her past songs. It was a very bold comeback and I really like the song. The drama following Ariana Grande and some things she addresses make me question her morals, but the rumors do not affect the quality of the song. Ariana Grande is releasing her upcoming next album Eternal Sunshine on March 8th, 2024. This was the first single off the album, and I give it 4/5 titan shields. It is a new vibe, but it has grown on me, and I am extremely excited to hear more from Grande.
