Jeon Jungkook, a young rebellious heartthrob from South Korea, released his first album, Golden, on November 3, 2023.
Most of the songs follow Jungkook devastated and recovering from a breakup or expressing his love for a potential girlfriend. His most successful hit, “Seven,” debuted number one on billboard’s hot 100 in July, when the song was first released as a single. He then added it to Golden, which he released in the beginning of November as his first solo album release.
Despite the album being predominantly Jungkook, there are features and writing done by other artists including Latto, Major Lazer, DJ Snake, Jack Harlow, Ed Sheeran, and Shawn Mendes.
While the majority of the songs are straightforward, there are a few that contain meanings and emotions on a deeper level. One of the songs, “Shot glass of tears,” uses the metaphor of him trying to party and have a good time but being brought back to the reality of his broken relationship, which fills his shot glass with tears.
Other songs like “3D,” or “Standing next to you,” plainly display how he promises to love and treat his girl correctly, and how nothing can divide them. Every song follows its own relationship storyline, with metaphors diving into the potential relationship Jungkook desires, and the failed relationships that led to heartbreak.
Golden is a pop album filled with ideas of both romance and heartbreak, it has seen great success since its release in November. Fans look forward to Jungkook creating more solo music and albums in the future, excited for his new solo career.
